Buying another Puma is not always a like-for-like replacement
If an existing Puma already runs your work, buying another can look straightforward. The catch is that a familiar name does not establish matching capacity, toolholders or control options. Model generation and the equipment fitted to each machine can change how easily a job transfers.
Start with the process you intend to repeat. A chucking job needs room for the jaws, part and cutting tools. Bar work adds limits through the spindle, drawtube and workholding. Long shafts bring support and working length into the decision. Maximum swing is not the same as the diameter the machine can turn with your planned tooling.
Choose the configuration your jobs can use
Many buyers start with horizontal Puma lathes for shafts, bushings and similar turned parts. The wider Puma name also includes materially different machines, including multi-turret and vertical turning families. A TT or vertical Puma is not simply a larger version of an ordinary single-turret horizontal lathe.
| Configuration | Practical reason to consider it | Purchase distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional horizontal turning | Parts mainly needing turning, boring and threading | Capacity, workholding and support for the part |
| Horizontal with live tooling | Suitable drilling or milling operations at the lathe | Installed driven tooling and controlled spindle capability |
| Y-axis or subspindle configuration | Off-center features or second-end work | Actual axes, transfer arrangement and included holders |
| Multi-turret or vertical Puma | A different production layout or workpiece requirement | Turret layout, workholding and process requirements |
Live tooling does not automatically mean Y-axis travel, and a tailstock is not a subspindle. Suffixes can help identify a candidate, but the listing and machine documentation must establish the equipment. Avoid paying for a capability your work will not use, or buying a simpler machine and assuming an upgrade will be economical.
Doosan Puma and DN Solutions Puma share a lineage
Doosan Machine Tools changed its company name to DN Solutions in May 2022. Puma remained part of that machine-tool lineage. Buyers comparing later-badged equipment can browse our used DN Solutions Puma machines alongside the legacy Doosan selection.
The rename is not a universal model-year cutoff or proof of identical specifications. A production generation, spindle package or control revision matters more to job transfer than the badge alone. For an older Puma, identify support requirements by the exact model and serial number rather than assuming every part or option is shared with a current machine.
Compare the total cost of keeping your process running
Used Puma asking prices reflect the model, age, condition and sale contents. A machine with suitable workholding and the holders your job needs may represent a different purchase from an otherwise similar bare machine. Hours are useful context, but they do not tell the whole operating or maintenance history.
Leave room in the budget for programming changes and tooling. A bar feeder in a photograph is not automatically included, and a supplied feeder still needs to suit your stock and production plan. Compare the actual package before deciding that one price is lower for equivalent equipment.
Premier can discuss the available machine information and help coordinate rigging and trucking quotes. Loading availability, delivery and readiness to make parts are separate dates. Tell us when the work is due so those details can be considered before you commit. Financing a used CNC purchase may help preserve working capital, subject to approval and terms.
If the listings do not match your job, contact our team with the full model you run today or the part requirements. We can discuss alternatives without assuming the next Puma with a similar number is a direct replacement.
Used Doosan Puma FAQs
What is the difference between Doosan Puma and DN Solutions Puma?
They belong to the same manufacturer lineage. Doosan Machine Tools became DN Solutions in May 2022. Doosan-badged machines span earlier generations, while DN-badged listings use the newer company name. Compare each machine's actual specification rather than choosing by badge alone.
Does every Doosan Puma have live tooling?
No. Puma includes turning-only machines and configurations with milling capability. Live tooling, Y-axis travel and a subspindle are separate features. Confirm the fitted equipment and included holders for the individual machine.
Can a used Puma replace my existing lathe without new tooling?
Possibly, but the model name does not establish compatibility. Chuck arrangements, turret interfaces and control options can differ. Compare the machine with your current workholding and programs before budgeting on a direct transfer.
How do I get a price on a used Doosan Puma?
Request a quote for the listing that fits your work, or call (407) 786-2000 if you need help narrowing the choice. Discuss included equipment, availability and delivery requirements so the quote reflects the purchase you actually need.
